It solves two problems: First, in dynamically typed contexts, the execution engine must know a value's type before operating on it. Second, placing this metadata in an extra struct field wastes memory and causes cache-misses from pointer chasing. To survive memory bus bottlenecks, engineers cram metadata directly into the unused bits of pointers. We'll discuss in the next post.
